This t-shirt is part of a collaboration between Southern California artist Matthew Allen and Journeux. Matthew hand carved and hand block printed the artwork on a limited edition of mens and womens t-shirts. Every t-shirt is unique with subtle variations in placement, ink density, and texture. The "Western Sun" artwork was inspired by the pillars of California's natural beauty, our Sierra Nevada mountains, our Pacific Ocean, and our Western Sun.
For the project, Journeux asked Matthew to create a piece of artwork that celebrated the beauty and culture of the West. Ruminations on those ideas are below.
"For me, our culture in the West is grounded in a life lived outdoors. Our western shores are blanketed by the pacific, and our sun rises over the Sierra Nevada mountains in the east. The icons of the west are surfers and cowboys. Souls who aren't tied down; who rise with the sun and follow its path to the sea. When I think about creating artwork that speaks to the culture of the west, of my home, that is where my mind rests. Every day is a good day that ends with me in the water, sitting on my surfboard, watching the sun slip into the sea." - Matt Allen
